Bob Baffert was suspended from Churchill Downs because his 2021 Kentucky Derby winner, Medina Spirit, tested positive for betamethasone, a corticosteroid that is legal for therapeutic use but banned within 14 days of a race in Kentucky.
This violation marked his fifth positive drug test in 12 months, contributing to Churchill Downs Inc. issuing an initial two-year ban in June 2021.
In July 2023, Churchill Downs extended the suspension to three years, citing Baffert’s ongoing attempts to challenge the findings and “peddle a false narrative” about the failed test.

Medina Spirit’s Derby win was officially stripped in February 2022. Baffert dropped his legal fight in January 2024 and publicly accepted responsibility in July 2024, which led to Churchill Downs lifting the suspension ahead of the 2025 Kentucky Derby.
Now back for the first time since the ban, Baffert has one horse, Citizen Bull, entered in the 2025 Derby.
