Xbox Prices Jump in U.S. and Canada Amid Tariff Pressures: Consoles, Games, and Accessories Up by 20–28%
Gamers in the U.S. and Canada are waking up to a wave of price hikes from Microsoft, as the tech giant has officially raised prices across its entire Xbox product lineup—including consoles, controllers, and games.
The company cites “market conditions and the rising cost of development” as the reasons behind the increase. But experts and analysts point to something more specific: former President Donald Trump’s renewed tariffs on foreign tech goods, which have driven up the cost of electronics manufactured overseas—particularly in China, where Xbox consoles are primarily produced.

What’s Going Up — and By How Much
Here’s a breakdown of the new prices shared by Microsoft:
Xbox Series S:
Old Price – $299.99
New Price – $379.99
(An increase of $80, or 28%)
Xbox Series X:
Old Price – $499.99
New Price – $599.99
(An increase of $100, or 20%)
Xbox Controllers:
Standard controllers will now cost $64.99, up from $59.99.
However, Adaptive Controllers and Joysticks for players with disabilities will remain at current prices.
New First-Party Xbox Games:
Upcoming major releases from Microsoft’s game studios will now retail for $79, up from the previous $69 price point.
Note: Prices of existing games won’t change.
What’s Driving the Increase?
While Microsoft’s official announcement avoids directly naming China or the Trump administration, it’s clear that the latest round of tech tariffs—aimed at goods manufactured abroad—has rippled through the gaming industry.
Many major game consoles, including the Xbox Series X and S, are assembled in Chinese factories. The new tariffs have raised the cost of importing these devices into North America, pushing companies like Microsoft to either eat the costs or pass them on to consumers.
Microsoft’s Official Statement
In a note on its support page, Microsoft acknowledged the challenge these changes may pose:
“We understand that these changes are challenging, and they were made with careful consideration given market conditions and the rising cost of development,” the company said.
“Looking ahead, we continue to focus on offering more ways to play more games across any screen and ensuring value for Xbox players.”
Microsoft emphasized its ongoing investment in services like Xbox Game Pass, cloud gaming, and multi-platform availability as ways to offset the rising hardware costs.
What It Means for Gamers
This marks one of the most significant price increases in the history of the Xbox brand. It also raises concerns that other console makers—like Sony (PlayStation) and Nintendo—may soon follow suit if tariff pressures persist.
Gamers who were planning to purchase a new console or load up on new games in the coming months might want to buy sooner rather than later, as further price increases could be on the horizon depending on global trade conditions.
